What is an Au Pair?

An Au Pair is a foreign-national assistant working and living with a host family. They are usually young women but it could be a young men as well, ages 18 to 25, who takes responsibility in caring for the home, including child care. In return, they are given allowance for their personal needs.

The main purpose of the au pair is to learn the language and to appreciate the culture of the country. They are allowed to stay for a maximum of one year. While their contract cannot be extended, a host family can request for another au pair after one year.

What are your expectations from your Au pair?

The Council of Europe has been established to provide protection of au pairs and Ideal Au Pair conforms to these prescribed policies. The primary task of au pair is to look after children and performs light domestic work of up to 30 hours per week. The au pair can be asked to provide care for children of up to three evenings weekly or one day per week or for a minimum of one weekend per month.

An au pair also gets paid for holidays equivalent to 14 days per year. The monthly compensation must be paid through a Dutch bank.

What are the qualifications?

A family wanting to host an au pair in Netherlands for more than three months must meet the following requirements:

  • The family must consist a minimum of two (2) persons

  • They must support the stay of the au pair in the Netherlands;

  • The family must have sufficient income to support themselves and the au pair

  • The person representing the host family must sign a sponsor declaration

  • The person representing the host family must sign a declaration of awareness

  • The family must come up with a daily schedule of activities for the au pair

 

How much will it cost?

The compensation of the au pair in Netherlands receives at a maximum of € 340 per month for 30 hours a week (referred to us as a pocket money).

What is the procedure?

If you decide to participate in the program, Ideal Au Pair will arrange for a house visit and interview. After the initial interview, Ideal Au Pair will immediately inform the applicant on how long it can find a suitable au pair. The applicant must also request for a Provisional Residence Permit to the IND (Integratie en Naturalisatie Dienst) the decision of which may be positive or negative. For negative response, the prospective host family may submit an application for review.
